NPL 2026 : Malan’s 70, Airee’s four-for power Chitwan to eight-run win against Biratnagar
David Malan struck a fluent 70 before Kamal Airee claimed four wickets as Chitwan Rhinos held off Biratnagar Kings by eight runs in the opening match of the day in the Nepal Premier League (NPL). Chasing 158, Biratnagar were bowled out for 149 in 19.3 overs, unable to complete the chase despite contributions from Imran Sheikh, Andre Russell and Lokesh Bam. Airee’s four-wicket haul proved decisive as Chitwan made a winning start to their campaign. Imran top-scored for Biratnagar with 39, while Russell provided a late push with 33. Bam made 26, but Biratnagar lost wickets at regular intervals and fell short of the target. Angelo Mathews scored 14 and Basir Ahmed added 13, but neither could guide the side over the line.
Airee finished with four wickets for 26 runs, leading a disciplined Chitwan bowling effort. Rijan Dhakal picked up two wickets, while Ranjit Kumar, Tom Taylor, Dan Mousley and Mausam Dhakal claimed one each. Earlier, Biratnagar won the toss and elected to field at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. Chitwan responded with 157 for three in 20 overs, built around Malan’s half-century and unbeaten contributions from captain Ravi Bopara and Mousley.
Malan anchored the innings with 70 off 50 balls, hitting five fours and five sixes. He looked to provide the platform for a competitive total before Andre Russell bowled him. Chitwan lost Dev Khanal for 12 off 15 balls and Arjun Saud for three, but Biratnagar could not capitalise on those breakthroughs. Bopara remained unbeaten on 32 off 26 balls, striking one four and two sixes, while Mousley finished on 29 not out to give Chitwan a solid total. For Biratnagar, Mathews, Russell and Charith Asalanka took a wicket apiece. However, their bowlers were unable to prevent Chitwan from posting a total that ultimately proved just beyond reach.
The result gives Chitwan Rhinos an early boost in the tournament, with Malan setting the foundation with the bat and Airee delivering the decisive performance with the ball. I
